How To Tone Your Own Hair Darker

I dearest to dye my hair all colors of the rainbow. I dear all things vintage. I also bask creating art, taking photos, and doing it myself.

What Exactly Is Pilus Toner?

Toner is a sweet little product that neutralizes brassy xanthous and orange tones on bleached hair. It is normally purple-bluish tinted. When applied to bleached hair, it takes it to more of an ashy, dusty, or platinum color. That means a much more than natural-looking pilus tone! It can also make your pilus expect shinier and healthier.

Toner is the term used for the product specifically meant to tone hair, but you can also use other products to tone your hair, such as pilus dye or imperial shampoo.

Accept you always seen someone walking around with yellow hair? And I don't mean like they picked up a canteen of Manic Panic'south Electric Banana pilus dye. I hateful, they tried to go blonde, and it just came out as a terrible mistake. Instead of Jennifer Lawrence, it was Lisa Simpson. That's bad.

The problem is that they didn't use a toner.

What Does Toner Practice to Pilus? Important Things to Know About Toner

  • Toners alter the undertone of pilus color only do non lift the shade. This is why they are meant to be practical to bleached or blonde hair and will not work on darker hair.
  • Toner tin can help y'all manipulate the shade of your blonde hair to make it look cooler, dingier, ashier, or even dissimilar colors like pinkish or purple.
  • Yous tin can employ it all over your hair or only in specific parts where you want to change the shade. For example, information technology tin tone down just the part of your hair with highlights or just at the roots to make them wait more natural.
  • The more you wash your pilus, the more frequently you'll have to tone it. You can either tone information technology at domicile or become to the salon for touch-ups.
  • You can utilize 3 different types of products to tone: purple shampoo, ammonia toners, or dye. I'll become into details nearly those below.

What Kind of Toner Should Yous Use?

Toner Type When to Apply How to Utilise It Notes

Ammonia-based toner

Hair should already be blonde. Wait a few days if you lot've just bleached it a bunch to avoid over-damaging.

Follow instructions on the production. Unremarkably you'll need to mix with a 20-vol developer.

This volition not lift the color of your pilus.

Purple shampoo

After bleaching hair. Gentler than ammonia-based toner.

Wash hair with it 2–3 times a week and go out in for 5–10 minutes each time.

Dissimilar brands have different strengths of toning.

Purple hair dye

After bleaching your hair

Mix a very small amount with white conditioner and leave in 15–30 minutes.

Make certain to use a small amount!

Wella Ammonia Toners

Wella has a great toner line called Color Charm. An ammonia-based toner is really a demi-permanent hair color that contains ammonia. It will modify the pigment makeup of your hair shafts. So exist careful!! If y'all've just done a bunch of bleaching, your hair is already pretty delicate. If yous tin stand it, wait a few days. In those few days, I'd really try to stay away from shampooing. Shampoo will but serve to dry out your hair fifty-fifty more.

Once your hair is done being mad at y'all, you'll be ready to apply toner. Wella, a well-known make of toner, calls for y'all to mix 1 part toner with two parts 20 volume developer. The mixture is left in the pilus for upwardly to 30 minutes before rinsing.

Don't attempt to make up your own ratio or change the instructions that y'all read on the bottle. Follow them! Each toner is different, and everyone's hair reacts slightly differently to the products. Give yourself the all-time chance at success and follow the directions.

Purple Shampoo

Some people skip that whole thing and tone using imperial shampoo. Yeah, that's really what information technology's called. I employ Generic Imperial Shampoo, which you can pick upwards at a Sally'southward or online. Information technology'south got a really strong royal tone to it, so when it's left on your hair for 5–10 minutes, it volition neutralize brassiness. This is great considering you can use information technology to maintain ashy tones every time you lot launder your pilus!

You might need to try a couple of different brands to get the strength of toning that you need.

Dye

Another method people use to tone is to but use dye. This is technically non "toning," merely information technology will serve the same purpose. The common theme here is using purple to neutralize yellowish . . . so the logical formula to tone using pilus dye would be to take a *small* amount of imperial pilus dye and mix it with a much larger corporeality of white conditioner. You'd apply the mixture for at least xv–thirty minutes and then rinse out.

When to Tone Blond Hair

Obviously, you lot should apply information technology later on bleaching. But when is best?

If y'all become to the store and buy yourself a toner, say, Wella's Colour Charm in Lightest Ash Blonde, yous'd actually have to wait until your hair is lifted to a very lite tone of yellow.

Otherwise, yous run the hazard of wasting your product and not achieving the desired results. So, one time you're at a lite-light yellow, you're gratis to tone.

In full general, you want to make sure that your pilus is the desired level of blonde that you want and that it's in a identify where it can take more treatment (is non too damaged).

Toner can help balance your color out and adjust the tone

Toner tin can help balance your color out and arrange the tone

What Results Tin can You Go?

You lot tin can get a huge range of colour tones, from warm dear to light ash, and even silver! Wella Colour Amuse Toners accept even got some red, brown, and violet toners that can exist used on dark hair. Do your research and effigy out what sort of tints and tones you lot tin can create on your own pilus!

Sometimes, y'all get unintended results. If you choose the wrong toner to balance your colour out, you may end up with light-green hair! But don't worry; it tin be fixed!

What's the Upkeep?

Depending on your hair-washing habits, you may have to re-tone anywhere from 2–eight weeks in. Make sure you don't wash your hair directly after toning because the colour will first to sideslip out.

The less oft you launder, the longer your color will stay in. Not to mention, you actually shouldn't be washing your hair every mean solar day . . . it strips out your natural oils and dries out your pilus. Which is really not the best matter to do when you lot've only been bleaching and toning!

Proceed Workout!

Any time y'all mess with bleach or ammonia, it'southward a keen idea to show your hair some beloved too. Use a leave-in conditioner, or use a pilus mask every and so often! There are some really corking ones that are and so simple to make and ofttimes use ingredients you probably have in your kitchen.

1 of my favorites is to oestrus up extra virgin olive oil until it'due south warm to the touch. Sitting over the tub, lean over so your head is kind of between your knees, and your hair is flipped upside downward. Massage the warm oil into your scalp to moisturize your hair and activate your pilus follicles. This is supposed to help your hair grow too! Leave the oil in for as long as you lot're comfortable, but at least 30 minutes, before washing out with a sulfate-gratuitous shampoo.

Coconut oil is another not bad tool to use when moisturizing hair. Don't hesitate to look up different hair "recipes" to keep your mane soft and strong!

I had my hair colored platinum a day agone with a new girl. She bleached it and added pink highlights. While she was doing the highlights she said she would put a toner on. When she was done my hair on the sides were very night (pixie cutting). The height is a light purple. It looks really awful!!!! How can I get the toner out?? Thank you!!

I bleached my daughter's dark blonde hair with Schwarzkopf BlondMe and so dyed with a mix of Igora Royal Rose and Pearlescence Coral about 2 months ago. It has faded a lot and she now wants to get with more of a light golden blonde. She has regrowth too. Would an ammonia-based toner work ?

Alex Rose (writer) from Virginia on June 03, 2020:

T18 isn't going to work, information technology simply works on super lite hair. If it were me, I'd go over the roots with a light brown dye. I'd apply simply at the roots, because if y'all take information technology too far downward your strands, it risks bleeding onto the parts you've just bleached!

M Harris on June 01, 2020:

Hello there,

I attempted to give myself at-habitation balayage during quarantine and I think something went sort of incorrect with the toning phase. I used a bleach powder with a 30 developer, painted the strands I wanted lighter, let it set for a niggling while, and when I took it out, the strands were light yellowish which is what I was expecting (I started equally an ashy low-cal dark-brown, and my hair lifts very quickly). However, when I toned, I used a the Wella T27 toner with ten developer, put it all over my caput, and may have waited a bit too long (somewhere around 45 mins). Instead of toning just the lightened strands and achieving a beige blonde with brown roots, the bottoms of my hair are fine and are blonde, simply the pinnacle is orange-y and yellow and I don't know how to gear up it. I tried imperial shampoo but information technology'due south notwithstanding yellow/orange (almost looks more than like strawberry blonde). It's non horrible, simply it'southward non what I wanted. Should I tone again with a different toner (possibly something more ashy like T18) and use 20 developer or x programmer? Or should I go over tiptop of my roots with a low-cal brown hair dye and merely dye roots? I'm not sure what move to brand hither. Any communication would be helpful!!

Alex Rose (writer) from Virginia on May 10, 2020:

I've never used the Schwarzkopf brand earlier so I'm not very familiar with information technology, only if you have yellowish tones in it it seems that Schwarzkopf Ice Toner may exist what you're looking for. That should tone you lot to a low-cal white/silvery! I'm assuming yous're going for platinum blonde, that seems to be the most like to Wella T18 which is what I use to go to platinum. Good luck!

Mia on May 08, 2020:

I bleached my hair with Schwarzkopf Blond me and twenty volume h2o, but I was afraid of breaking my hair so I´ve removed the bleach after 20 minutes. Some parts are quite orange now. Afterwards that, I mixed a 9.ane with 7 volume developer and I left it, on wet hair, around 10 minutes. I washed it with purple shampoo and I performed a keratin treatment afterwards. I don´t detest it simply still is in some parts kinda yellowish. So my question is, tin can I bleach it again on the roots, and what produuct of Schwarkopf blond me do you reccomend me to tone it. I'one thousand from kingdom of spain this is a make I tin can go here that is why I am asking. Thanks very much.

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on May 05, 2020:

I would recommend giving information technology a few days to a week - don't shampoo in that fourth dimension! Merely utilise conditioner or hair oils to hydrate your hair. Shampooing volition just strip the moisture back out. Luckily you probably aren't seeing that many people right at present so it'due south the all-time time to just take care of your pilus.

Ordinarily this is the process I'll do - I lighten information technology up enough, get out information technology yellowish for a week, and then do the toner. Just make sure you continue conditioning, and endeavour not to shampoo so frequently. Since I've gotten my hair to white, I only shampoo it in one case a week. Use a dry out shampoo if you lot need! Good luck!

Donna from Manchester on May 02, 2020:

Hello I bleached my hair twice it's gone a lovely shade but bleaching it has caused damage and then I am now deep conditioning for a few days before putting a silver on just would it be safe for me to use the t18 and developing cream first or volition information technology cause more than damage thankyou in advance

Alex Rose (writer) from Virginia on May 01, 2020:

I call up you would accept to bleach your hair first, which should be quick and like shooting fish in a barrel since your hair is already blonde. I'd use Ion Bright White Creme Lightener and Salon Care 10 Volume Creme Programmer. Since y'all've never done your pilus earlier, y'all should enlist someone to aid you become even coverage with the bleach!

In one case you've gotten it to the lightness you want, rinse out. Could be anywhere from 10 to xl minutes. Then use Wella T18 toner with 10 or 20 book programmer!

Chantal on Apr 29, 2020:

Howdy, I am naturally blonde and take never dyed my pilus. My pilus is a natural blonde colour with gold undertones. I would love to get more of a silver blonde with cool undertones. Practise you lot have whatsoever tips as to which products I tin use to reach this? Thank you in advance!

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on April 27, 2020:

Hi! Then information technology's pretty hard to become from brownish to silver, but your friend is right, he probably will accept to bleach twice. I usually get my supplies from Sally Beauty, which is closed correct now, but you tin order from their stores online with no big shipping delays.

Unfortunately drug stores and superstores similar WalMart don't ordinarily accept the right supplies for bleaching or toning, but they have enough of dye.

If you can order online from Emerge'southward, I'd recommend getting Wella T18 toner and Salon Care 20 volume creme developer. These products will tone his hair to a more neutral colour, but they volition Simply work if all of his hair is calorie-free yellowish. If yous're all the same seeing some night yellow and orange tones in it, he needs to bleach once more earlier using toner.

If you're searching for another sort of bleach to utilize, I recommend Ion Brilliant White Creme Lightener, which you tin also use with the xx volume developer. All of these products can be found on Sally Beauty'due south website! Sad I can't recommend something in-shop, information technology may be better to order online right now anyways!

Lisa on April 25, 2020:

Hi, your manufactures are swell and total of like shooting fish in a barrel to understand info. My son decided he wants to dye his hair grayness/silver. He ordered a bleach kit, and dye, only he has dark brownish hair so he was told past a friend he would need to bleach information technology twice so he did it last dark and was planning on doing it over again today just it's definitely yellow and needs toner. Could yous recommend a toner/hair color kit that we could find at a grocery store, cvs, target or a Walmart that would exist an option to use as toner since the beauty stores are closed?

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on April 23, 2020:

It's platonic to accept platinum blonde hair before using a blueish dye. Toner's non going to help you unless your hair is calorie-free enough in the first identify. The unfortunate truth about blue is that blue + blonde (basically xanthous tones) = greenish. It's always going to fade green unless your hair is platinum, white, or silver underneath. My process is to bleach to super light yellow, tone with Wella T18 to have basically white-platinum hair, and so utilize blue dye. If you don't want to bleach it platinum, the only solution I tin can see here is to only wash your pilus once a week, and employ dye about once a week or two to keep it from fading.

As for roots, when I'grand using bluish I always bleach my roots afterward nigh 4-6 weeks, and apply colour direct later on. I practise recommend Chill Flim-flam dejection because they don't take any harsh chemicals in them and are very vibrant. If you're not bleaching your roots, you can just use AF dye right onto them, go out it in for a couple hours, and rinse out in the shower!

Megan on April 22, 2020:

I desire to add blue to my hair, just I hate when it fades to a green-ish tone, how can I avert this? Should I utilise a toner between bleaching and dying it blueish? I currently dye over my darker blonde hair with a Wella 8N without bleaching it in order to slightly lighten it. I'm going to bleach the underneath layer of my hair with a 20 developer in order to go a more vibrant color, but I'm not going to go super blonde. Should I employ a toner to help prevent the blue from fading to green? Is at that place a amend blueish brand I should use afterwards the bleach? Also, when touching upwards the blue colour after, do you have tips for what I should be doing with my roots? Give thanks you!!

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on Apr 22, 2020:

Purple shampoo doesn't do a whole lot unless you exit it in for a long time, I'd say it's probably better for you to tone your pilus once more. If you're able to make an appointment, I'd go with that - but if you're stuck doing information technology at habitation, you should easily be able to tone!

If your highlights are super lite, like yellowy, I'd use Wella T18. I'g thinking since your pilus is dark-brown, yours may be more of a gilded colour, in which case I'd recommend Wella T35. You'd mix a 20 volume developer with this and so utilize it to the lightened sections. Wait up "Wella Toner Chart" on google images and you'll notice a graphic that will help show you lot what the different toners do!

Sandra Grooms on April 17, 2020:

My hair is dark have I had highlights done nigh 4 months ago and the are turning flippant, I've used purple shampoo and it hasn't done anything. Tin can I tone my pilus to lighten them back up or should I take them redone??

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on Apr 15, 2020:

If you desire highlights to be touched upwards, the only way you'll be able to practise it is with bleach! Dye is adding color on top, while bleach is pulling pigment out and making information technology lighter. A toner is something yous would use on hair that has already been lightened.

Bleach is a lot to larn and there are lots of mistakes that you tin can make - it may be best to just expect until salons open back up, unless y'all are 100% assault doing it at home! I do have some articles on how to utilize bleach - yous should be able to pick upwardly bleach highlight kits from a drug store. They include a cap that y'all accept to pull trivial bits of hair through.

Patricia Lingard on Apr 15, 2020:

I have lite blonde highlights and roots showing upward darker and so ive put ash blonde nice + like shooting fish in a barrel on pilus . Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on March 23, 2018:

Everyone's pilus is different, depending on what toner you utilise you may end up toning only the xanthous and not the orangish! If you go for something with a blue-violet base information technology should cover both areas. If you're prepare on not bleaching, that's what I would look for. Just keep in mind, you may not exist able to achieve ash from orangish without another bleaching. Wella has a toner that works on "aureate" hair, T35. You could also try using an ash blonde box dye. Some other pick for the oranges would be to pick up a blueish toning shampoo, that will gradually reduce the orangish tones should they not come out otherwise. At that place are pretty good reviews for Joico'due south Color Residuum Blue Shampoo!

hi! I'g planning on bleaching my pilus. Right at present it'due south a really nighttime dark-brown because i dyed it a couple months ago. How many sessions do i need to achieve blonde without having too much damage? thank you!

Alex Rose (writer) from Virginia on Nov nineteen, 2017:

Toner does olfactory property really strong every bit it typically contains ammonia, information technology could have been. I'm not familiar with MG7 and MG6 or what that could have been. Did it look lighter before she put the"toner" in? If the bleach was in for 20 minutes information technology definitely should have done something.

Fall on November 18, 2017:

I just had highlights done. When stylist took foils out and washed my hair, she put something on my pilus...it smelled strong (like dye). I asked what it was and she said toner. I never had toner smell like this. I think information technology was hair dye for a error. She said MG7 on roots and MG 6 on ends or something like that to her asst. My pilus looks similar it has aught highlights after having foils/bleach put on it for 20 mins. Stylist said it will fade. Information technology looks similar I never had my pilus colored. Any thoughts on if this was actually toner or non?

Aya on October 01, 2017:

Hullo! I dyed my pilus gray/ silver. Can I tone it every 2-three weeks to intensify the color? Or will it wash the greyness dye off? Thank you! :)

Brigitte Lalonde on Baronial twenty, 2017:

I just bought a beige blonde instead of ash blonde. I as well bought a toner from Schwarzkopf. I would love to take the regal colour with the girl with her face covered. Exercise I have to put purple conditioner in the toner to get this color or if you please, tell me the steps you have taken to attain this color. I also bought from amazon a color only made in the Britain and information technology is similar this royal but has more color as it is a PEARL colour. Then I thought I would blond my pilus first to go prepare for the PEARL color. I want to get this right and would honey to hear how to practice the light blonde to purple as in the motion-picture show higher up. I am prepare to get buy a hair stripper if needed and I found some expensive purple shampoo and I actually would love to attain this color. Assistance ME Delight? Cheers A MILLION...Brigitte

Freja on Baronial 04, 2017:

Hey then my pilus turned COMPLETELY yellow. We are talking pee yellow here. I was dark blond and used the l'oreal Perfect blonde creme that lifts your hair upward to 6 tones. I bleached it once and it turned Really yellowish, and then i realised it hadnt been sitting long enough. So a few hours afterwards i did it again and permit it sit the remanining fourth dimension. It turned it lighter and a slighter bit less yellow. I was wondering what I should do? I'm starting in schoolhouse in half-dozen days and i'd like it to be pretty there (when my hair has calmed down the program is to color information technology pastel pink, can i do that on slighty yellow hair? or?)

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on Baronial 02, 2017:

The dye toner won't brand your hair lighter, just take out the brassiness. I believe when I did a dye toner I left it in for about twenty minutes. It was yet a darkish blonde, the only way to get any lift would exist to use a product with bleach or ammonia.

maidenblush on July 31, 2017:

Hello, I was wondering how oft tin yous tone the hair using imperial hair dye + conditioner? I recently bleached my level 1/2 hair twice till it got to a orange brassy color. So I dyed it in a blonde shade and got like an ashy blonde colour, merely all the same had the brassiness so I fabricated myself a diy imperial toner and left it for merely 5mins. Should I leave the purple dye in longer the next fourth dimension to achieve a lighter pilus colour? Or should I re-dye it over with a blonde shade?

Your reply would be profoundly appreciated! xx

Give thanks you for your nifty article! Very informative! Question for yous- I have tried a couple different Color Charm toner shades subsequently doing at home frosting (both lighter and darker blond highlights). Here's my problem- I'yard a natural redhead that's at present by and large dark-brown ruddy with a fleck of greyness, now that I'k in my 40'southward. So, patently for me, lots and lots of brassiness whenever I try to frost/highlight. Would you still recommend this toner for someone like me? I'm a bit stumped whenever I utilize it, as to whether I should leave it on for shorter or longer than recommended time.

I don't know if it would physically hurt or not, seems like you have a sensitive scalp. Information technology would definitely help with the colour though.

Libby Stephens on July 07, 2017:

Hey, my neice bleached my roots quaternary of July. Which came out xanthous blonde. Then put toner t18 on it. I had it on for 8 minutes and started burning. So, i washed it out. My pilus in front is silver and my part and back and sides are still xanthous. Would it hurt to get back with the toner again, or should i wait.?

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on July 01, 2017:

You will have to either bleach the ends again or utilize a color stripper! I would virtually rather go with bleach to be sure it works. Information technology'due south ever going to piece of work meliorate on virgin hair that is at your roots, the rut from your scalp makes information technology develop quicker. And so I would say try out another bleach and encounter if it'due south light enough to tone platinum!

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on July 01, 2017:

I would just try to tone again if it is but light yellow streaks! I have not used t14 before simply if it has skilful reviews, may be worth a try!

Sammi huxley on July 01, 2017:

Should I use a dissimilar wella toner, heard t14 is good. My pilus is holding up quite well. Thank you lot.

I bought a L'Oreal color strip and the wella colours dark ash blonde and calorie-free dark-brown because I don't desire it to light. But I forgot to buy toner. Would John Freda blonde shampoo or conditioner work as good as toner or is there something else you can suggest I tin can but buy from walmart. I ask because Emerge Beauty is not close past and don't want to have to bulldoze there again.

Thank you for your help!!

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on May 31, 2017:

If y'all toned, nothing major would happen to your brown pilus. If annihilation it would merely be toned a little cooler likewise, only it won't lighten up or anything.

Leahcj on May 30, 2017:

Hi, sorry if you lot've already answered this question but I take dark-brown hair with blonde highlights and lowlights. The highlighted pieces are starting to plough a little yellowish and orange. I already utilise purple shampoo but information technology doesn't seem to make much of a difference. If I were to tone my hair would anything happen to the pilus that is brown?

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on May 04, 2017:

I would leave the pink solitary and tone! You might even consider using a calorie-free pink from Manic Panic - that won't have any harsh chemicals in it like a toner would. They have Cotton Candy Pinkish if yous'd like to check information technology out!

John Passanante on May 03, 2017:

I used clairol seventh stage bleached out three times with 30 peroxide just still orangey

What bleach is stronger than 7th stage clairol?

Cheyenne on May 03, 2017:

Hey, loved your article. My hair has been through a lot recently; I made the fault of listening to Emerge's employees...So long story short, I dyed my hair a dark red, and eventually decided that I didn't like the color. I wanted to become to a light brown, that fades into kind of a rose pink. I waited a few days, and was told to go ahead and bleach it every bit pale every bit I can go information technology. My biggest mistake was not using a dye-remover to accept out the red dye. I've got some orange, yellow, and actually pale pinkish streaks going on. I've washed several bleach baths; that'southward the maximum harm that my hair can take at this bespeak.

What would you suggest that I exercise from here? Should I leave the pink streaks alone since that I'll accept the roses pink in my hair somewhen anyway? And just tone the residual?

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on April 19, 2017:

T14 should work well on the darker parts of the highlights! If the rest of your pilus is super dark, I would just put it on the lightened parts. Won't make much of a difference on your nighttime hair.

Nina on April xviii, 2017:

My Natural hair is very night brown (calorie-free black) last year my hairdresser bleached all my hair and then put light brown color on my pilus, for virtually a year I only touched upward my roots with out bleaching which was pretty fine. last calendar month I went to salon to darken my hair and have some highlights on acme of that, only the result of highlight is terrible, about five inches (highlighted part) close to my roots is Orange while the rest of them is light blond.

tin I utilise T14 Toner? and should I use toner for all my hair or Only the highlighted parts?

ShennaR on April 12, 2017:

I used the color prep that comes in a box and is supposed to elevator any old unwanted color. It is ammonia and bleach gratis. So my natural hair colour is a little lighter give thanks muddied blonde only I had a dark burgundy dye on it and wanted to go back to blonde or even platinum. The color prep left my hair a really ugly orange what would exist my next step ?? Bleach and so tone with what??

Adele on March ten, 2017:

Hello, loved your article! I just wanted to ask y'all how long did the outcome of the conditioner + purple dye last :)

Alex Rose (author) from Virginia on February 21, 2017:

waveybadrian, are you bleaching or dying your hair? Toner is meant to be used afterwards bleach, on a clean slate. I'm honestly not sure how it will work on hair that already has a production on it. It may be fine! Only y'all can probably find a toner that would work in place of a dye, and so you don't have to use double the chemicals on your hair. Wella 9a/940 or Wella 8a/740 1/2 may exist some toners to consider!
